Courttia Newland's latest novel A River Called Time is an expansive work of speculative fiction set in a world where slavery and colonialism never happened, and where a blend of African cosmology and traditional world beliefs underpin everyday life. Its central character uses astral projection to leave his body and explore spiritual realms and alternate planes.

Producers Phoebe McIndoe and Redzi Bernard spoke to Courttia about how his own experiences informed his writing. Listen.
